On 7 September VW, the State of Lower Saxony and Aurelius Capital agreed key terms for the possible sale of Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH. Aurelius would be majority owner with the state; the site is to become a competence center for security and defense. Initial anchor project: cooperation with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems on systems/components for air defense (Germany/Europe). Vehicle production was already set to phase out in summer 2027. Transaction still needs final agreements, corporate-body approvals and regulatory reviews. Works-council commentary points to a future prospect for a large share of the ~1,800 workforce (VW cites >1,200 with a near-term perspective).

On 7 September coverage confirmed JLR will cut around 4,000 jobs globally over two years, mostly salaried/management/R&D in the UK (~26,000 UK salaried pool), aiming to save £1.7bn and break even near ~300k vehicles/year. Voluntary redundancy window open until 4 October; compulsory on less generous terms if uptake is short. Factory hourly roles largely spared per reporting. Context: revenue ~£29bn → £22.9bn over two years; cyber-attack aftermath, US tariffs, China competition in UK (Chery brands). UK government meeting this week; bailout ruled out, “long-term investment” language kept.

Stellantis halted Mirafiori (Turin) Fiat 500 production for 2–4 September after strong hybrid demand stressed engine-component supply from Teksid Carmagnola (Stellantis ~85% owned). Company line: hybrid orders above plan; Teksid output insufficient. Unions split on narrative (FIOM also cites weak sales). Follow-on reporting pointed to further body-shop pauses around 7–8 September. Target pace before the stop: ~400 units/day on two shifts after summer restart 24 Aug. Mild-hybrid 1.0 / 12V system — not a HV BEV story.

Wirtschaftswoche (4 Sep) and follow-ons: management told works councils that without sharp German labour-cost cuts, Mercedes would expand in Eastern Europe and make a German production site redundant. Demands include ~5 extra weekly hours without pay and bonus review; no plant named; no board decision. Kecskemét (Hungary) capacity doubled toward ~400k units/year; factor costs cited ~70% below Germany. June staff letter already flagged German capacity “significantly exceeds demand.” Mercedes declines detailed comment; no denial reported.

Supervisory Board approved Future Plan 2030 on 3 September: ~9m annual sales target, 9% operating margin by 2030 (~€31bn), ~€135bn CapEx/R&D 2027–31, ~50% model cut / ~75% less offering complexity by 2035, ~50,000 further workforce adjustments. European capacity exceeds demand by >500,000 units; competitive future allocation for Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and Neckarsulm cannot currently be secured (staggered 2031–34). Commission proposal (Dec 2025 package, still in Council working-party scrutiny through 2026) would lower the 2035 LDV target from 100% to 90% vs 2021, with remaining emissions offset via sustainable renewable fuel credits and/or EU low-carbon steel credits; vans 2030 target proposed 40% (from 50%). Member-state views diverge widely on targets and flexibilities. Any softening of BEV mix assumptions changes EDS HV vs ICE content planning.
