Q5D-led UK consortium will build an automated harness line; equipment due 2028, operation 2029

Europe

Q5D Technologies leads AutoLoom, a £6.27m project funded through the UK DRIVE35 programme (via the Advanced Propulsion Centre). Partners are WMG (University of Warwick), Artifex (part of Tata AutoComp) and an unnamed major UK vehicle maker. The aim is a production-representative line that builds both flat harnesses and pre-wired parts such as door panels, bumpers and headliners straight from CAD data with robots, instead of manual harness boards. Production equipment is planned for 2028 and operation from 2029, ahead of possible use on the OEM’s 2030/31 programmes.

Copper: Escondida supervisors vote to strike; BHP’s mediation request buys about a week

Americas

Sindicato N°2 (supervisors and staff, ~1,020 members) rejected BHP’s final offer on 30 Sep; 955 of 1,007 votes (94.8%) backed a strike. BHP asked Chile’s labour inspectorate for mandatory mediation on 5 Oct, which suspends the strike for five working days, extendable by five more if both sides agree. The union says a strike would stop Escondida almost completely (about 2,877 t/day of fine copper). A separate strike vote passed at Antofagasta’s Centinela. LME copper cash was around $14.5k/t on 6 Oct.

Metall/Elektro: talks open today in Baden-Württemberg and NRW; employers reject the 5% demand

Europe

First rounds for about 3.7 million workers start today in Ludwigsburg and Düsseldorf, with other regions following 8–14 Oct. IG Metall wants 5% for 12 months, plus job and site security and profit-sharing at strong companies. New Gesamtmetall president Udo Dinglreiter says there is no room to share out gains and the priority is cutting costs; employers point to about 350,000 jobs lost since 2019. The peace obligation ends 31 Oct, so warning strikes are possible from 1 Nov.

VW Wolfsburg drops the late shift on assembly line 1 from 12 Oct as ICE demand falls

Europe

From Monday 12 Oct, line 1 (combustion Tiguan and pre-series ID.3 Neo) runs on the early shift only. VW gives lower combustion-car volumes as the reason. Workers move to other shifts and lines, and staff on loan from Zwickau and Emden return to those EV plants. This follows the earlier cancellation of all extra shifts to year-end. ID.3 Neo series production on the mixed line is planned for early 2027.

Stellantis Italy: 2026 output seen at ~450k, below the ~500k hoped for; Cassino down 37%

Europe

FIM Cisl’s quarterly report (6 Oct): 340,745 vehicles in the first nine months (+28.3%), cars 206,945 (+36.7%), vans 133,800 (+17.3%). Mirafiori 46,323 (+151%) and Melfi 47,580 (+77%) drove growth. Cassino built only 8,897 cars (−37.1%) and may reach about 12,000 for the year. Union meeting with the company on 15 Oct.

Hungary: CATL’s 2022 incentive memo made public as the new government declines to back expansion

Europe

On 6 Oct, Tisza MP Zsolt Tárkányi published seven pages of the 2022 letter of intent between the Orbán government and CATL. It offered a development tax allowance of up to 80% of corporate tax for up to 13 years (subject to EU approval), cash support up to 25% of innovation costs, VIP status and utility funding. The document was not legally binding. CATL says phase 1 (about 40 GWh, ~HUF 900bn spent) is booked for years, it employs about 3,000 people, will launch a local supplier campaign, and does not count BYD as a customer. Világgazdaság reports that the new government will not support expansion beyond phase 1.

Kongsberg Automotive gets approval for Cluses (France) restructuring; about half the jobs were at risk
