Audi pulls the ‘bad-weather clause’ for Neckarsulm and wants to renegotiate its 2025 job pact

Europe

At a works meeting on 8 Oct, attended by VW Group CEO Oliver Blume (who was partly booed), Audi told Neckarsulm staff it wants to use the clause in its job-security pact that forces talks on further savings when conditions worsen sharply. The March 2025 pact already cuts about 7,500 jobs by 2029 in exchange for no compulsory layoffs until end-2033; the works council says compulsory layoffs before 2033 stay off the table and is checking whether the clause’s conditions are met. Under VW’s September savings plan the site has until about mid-2027 to present a viable cost concept; CEO Gernot Döllner said Ingolstadt must also save. The A8 ends this year (its successor likely goes to Leipzig), A5 and A6 end in 2033, and no models are planned for Neckarsulm after that. The site has about 15,000 staff.

Metall/Elektro: no employer offer in Bavaria, Lower Saxony or Küste; second rounds on 27 Oct

Europe

First rounds on 8 Oct ended without an offer and without any movement. In Bavaria (836,000 workers) the vbm employers made no offer while 3,700 workers demonstrated in Munich. NiedersachsenMetall calls the 5% demand ‘simply unrealistic’, citing output about 15% below 2018 and nearly 350,000 jobs lost nationally. IG Metall wants 5% for 12 months, profit-sharing at strong companies and job-security rules for firms in crisis. Second rounds are set for 27 Oct (Coburg for Bavaria); the peace obligation ends 31 Oct, so warning strikes are possible from 1 Nov. Separately, IG Metall wants 5% at VW too, where house agreements end 31 Dec.

Germany raises its 2026 growth forecast to 1.3% and 2027 to 1.1%, but sees only 0.6% in 2028

Europe

The economy ministry’s autumn projection (8 Oct) raises 2026 GDP growth from 0.5% (April) to 1.3%, and 2027 from 0.9% to 1.1%, with 0.6% for 2028. Exports, public investment and defence spending drive the upturn; high energy prices and the Middle East and Ukraine conflicts are the main risks. The DIHK warns the recovery rests on debt-financed state spending and that exports have no momentum of their own; the auto and supplier industry remains weak while aerospace, defence and electrical engineering grow.
