France–Germany lock auto package deal after SPD clears — ~80% CO₂ path + Made-in-Europe
the SPD blocker is gone. On Friday afternoon Paris and Berlin published a joint Élysée statement confirming they have reached agreement on a joint approach to the EU automotive package and Industrial Accelerator Act. Per POLITICO (16 Oct, 13:04 CEST), Germany accepts stricter automotive Made-in-Europe local-content rules; France backs softening the 2035 CO₂ cut to 90%, plus a further ~10% leeway via alternative-fuel investment — an effective ~80% path. An Élysée official said Made-in-Europe for cars can extend to the UK and Switzerland under conditions. German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) publicly backed the deal. This is still a bilateral FR–DE position — not EU law; co-legislators still need to finish by year-end (Council invite already noted this morning).
