Executive Snapshot

  • BMW’s second outlook cut (automotive margin −0.5% to +0.5%) and Aptiv’s $700m 2027 chip-inflation warning point to harder 2027 price talks and more volatile German premium volumes.

Top Developments

  1. BMW cuts its 2026 automotive margin outlook for the second time, to between −0.5% and +0.5%, as it books restructuring for an accelerated realignment; Q3 automotive EBIT falls 40% and China deliveries drop 25%

    Asia

BMW now guides a 2026 automotive EBIT margin of −0.5% to +0.5% (previously 1–3%); before restructuring the operating margin stays above 2.0%. The cut includes about 2.5 points from portfolio and structural measures, 1.25 points from tariffs and 1.2 points from purchase-price accounting at BMW Brilliance. In Q3 the automotive EBIT margin was 3.4% (5.2% a year earlier) and automotive EBIT €901m (−39.7%). Deliveries fell 6.3% to 551,075, with China −25%, Europe +2.6% and the US +2.5%; group revenue was €30.45bn (−5.8%). Automotive free cash flow was −€566m in the quarter, but the full-year target stays above €2.5bn. BMW will phase out models on the current battery generation earlier because Neue Klasse demand is strong (extra shifts), and accelerate management-level cuts; 46.9% of European deliveries were electrified.

  2. Aptiv’s first full quarter after the EDS spin: Q3 beats, but it flags about $700m of semiconductor (mostly memory) inflation for 2027 and a $250–300m revenue headwind from two German luxury OEMs; shares fall 6.5%

    Europe

Revenue was $3.2bn (+2% adjusted) and adjusted EPS $1.42 against about $1.33 consensus; adjusted EBITDA was $567m (17.7% margin, down 140 basis points). Intelligent Systems fell 3% to $1.4bn on weakness at two German luxury OEMs and lower exports to China; Engineered Components (connectors and cable management) grew 6% to $1.8bn. Q4 guidance is $3.11–3.21bn revenue and $1.35–1.55 EPS, and the full-year free-cash-flow midpoint was cut by $25m to $650m because inventory investment rose with inflation. Q3 bookings were about $4bn; China bookings +30%, European Intelligent Systems bookings more than doubled. It will review its business portfolio and report in Q1 2027.

  3. Continental (now mainly tyres and ContiTech) raises its 2026 margin guidance to 13.4–14.0% after a 14.9% Q3 margin, while flagging heavier raw-material costs in Q4 and a weaker global production picture

    Global

Q3 sales were €3.5bn (−1.5% organic) and adjusted EBIT €514m (14.9% margin). The 2026 adjusted EBIT margin guidance rises to 13.4–14.0% (previously 12.0–13.5%), with sales of €13.5–13.9bn and adjusted free cash flow of €1.0–1.3bn; the ContiTech margin outlook was cut to 6.5–7.5%. Continental puts Q3 global light-vehicle production at about −1.6%, with Europe flat, North America about −5% and China about −6%, and expects raw-material costs to weigh more in Q4.

  4. Stellantis ECU shortage: Italian press names Marelli as the supplier of the missing Fiat N3 GSE engine control unit, itself short of a chip; the Pandina fell 29% month on month in October

    Europe

Following the 2 Nov Stellantis warning (covered yesterday), MilanoFinanza and askanews report, citing sources, that Marelli supplies the N3 GSE engine control unit and is short of a semiconductor from its own supplier. Neither company commented. Pandina registrations dropped 29% from September to October, and Stellantis fell 5.5% in Italy (−9.5% excluding Leapmotor) in a market up 4.8%. The Mirafiori 500 Hybrid line is stopped again this week and Termoli engine output could be affected. Stellantis shares fell 5.4% in New York on 3 Nov.

  5. IG Metall warning strikes reach BMW’s Munich plant and headquarters, Wackersdorf and, for the first time, the new Irlbach-Straßkirchen battery plant, plus Ford Saarlouis and Nemak; third-round talks start Thursday 5 Nov in Ludwigsburg

    Europe

On 4 Nov IG Metall Bavaria called out 64 sites, including BMW Munich (plant and HQ), Wackersdorf and the Irlbach-Straßkirchen battery assembly plant, a rally in Schweinfurt with ZF, Schaeffler, SKF and Bosch Rexroth staff, and suppliers such as Magna Markt Schwaben, Grammer, Valeo (Ebern, Bad Rodach), Bosch Bamberg and Brose Würzburg. In Saarland, Ford Saarlouis, Nemak Dillingen and Nedschroef are on strike. The union wants 5% for 12 months; employers offer 1.3% from July 2028. The third round begins on 5 Nov in Baden-Württemberg (Ludwigsburg) and on 6 Nov in Bremen for the Küste district.

  6. Material and memory inflation: Hyundai and Kia absorbed about ₩870bn of extra raw-material cost in Q3 and expect more in 2027; Stellantis is reviewing wiring layouts and connectors to use less material

    Asia

Hyundai put its Q3 raw-material burden at about ₩500bn and Kia at ₩368bn against a year earlier, and both expect it to continue into Q4 and 2027 because high-price purchases feed through with a lag and contracts renew next year. Chosunbiz cites World Bank data showing Q3 copper prices up 43.9% year on year and TrendForce data showing DDR4 8Gb DRAM spot prices up 30.3% between 1 Jul and 27 Oct; Visteon says automotive DDR4 supply will be tighter next year as some suppliers exit. Stellantis is reviewing wiring layouts and connectors to cut material use. Korean supplier HL Mando booked about ₩42bn of extra cost in Q3 and is negotiating recovery with OEMs.

  3. Nexperia’s Dutch management sues its Chinese parent Wingtech in Amsterdam for more than $2bn, deepening the split between the European and Chinese parts of the chipmaker

    Asia

Wingtech disclosed on 3 Nov that Nexperia filed a claim in an Amsterdam court against Wingtech, its founder and former Nexperia CEO Zhang Xuezheng and two Chinese entities, alleging they broke internal agreements by setting up a separate, competing supply chain. Wingtech had sued three Dutch Nexperia entities in China in May for about $1.2bn, and a Chinese court froze about $300m of Nexperia assets in August. Shipments from the Dongguan packaging site resumed after last year’s export stop, but the split is not resolved.

  4. Thailand raises excise tax on fully imported battery-electric and range-extender cars to 35% from 1 January 2027, from 10% and 15%; locally built EVs that meet the conditions stay exempt

    Asia

Thailand’s cabinet approved the change on 3 Nov. Importers expect a buying rush before year-end; locally assembled EVs that meet the investment conditions keep the lower rate.

    Europe
